how does she do it?

This morning I went into the kitchen to wash some dishes, and when I returned I found Vera hard at work at the coffee table. Not only was she dilligently scribbling on her very important papers, but she was also gingerly holding her baby in her other arm. She seemed so focused and serene. No sign of stress, she didn't look overwhelmed. Once I saw her pause in her writing effort to playfully nibble her baby's hand.

As some of you know, I am considering going back to school next year to become a midwife. I have had my share of concerns about how I will manage classes, homework, apprenticeship and motherhood. Vera is truly an inspiration to all of us who hope to balance work and parenthood.

But it gets better. I moved a little closer to see what it was that she was so engrossed in and was impressed to find that she was making notes on an article advocating for paid family leave. Family, career, and she still finds time for politics, working on behalf of other parents like herself.

By the way, does anyone else think Vera is advanced in her pen holding skills?

Oh my gosh, I want to squeeze her. I love it.

Did you know that when David was in preschool, his only negative marks on his report card were in 'holding the pencil correctly'?

So, another area where Vera takes after her mama! : )
